There is a certain argument I come across among critics every now and then, to deride certain characters for the reason that they don’t receive character development in the series. This argument has always struck me as completely absurd. Since when was character development the only way to create a 3-dimensional character?
Generally, there are about 4 ways in which a character can excel (withholding the occasional exceptions): Charisma/entertainment value, relatability, character development, and the fourth way which is often confused for a lack of character development. It doesn’t really have a name, per se, or at least not one that comes to mind, but many of the greatest characters in anime history come under it.
